Common questions

Can Americans retire in Portugal?

Yes. US citizens can apply for the D7 visa with passive income of €920 a month for one person, or €1,380 for a couple, at 2026 rates. Pensions, Social Security, rental income and dividends count.

Can my partner and children come with me to Portugal?

Yes. Couples can apply together and arrive at the same time. With children under 18, the family can apply together, or one parent can apply first and bring the family afterwards, which can lower the upfront cost. Couples without children under 18 usually apply together, because a partner who joins later can face a waiting period.

How much do I need to earn for Portugal's digital nomad visa?

An average of €3,680 a month before tax over the last three months in 2026. That is four times Portugal's minimum wage of €920.

Is there a job-seeker visa for Portugal?

Not at the moment. The general job-seeker visa closed on 23 October 2025. A replacement for qualified professionals has been announced, but it had no opening date as of October 2026. Most people need a job offer first, or use the D7 or D8 route.

Do I need to buy property to get Portuguese residency?

No. Buying property stopped qualifying for Portugal's golden visa in October 2023, and none of the routes on this page require it. You do need an address in Portugal, and a 12-month lease is enough.

How long until I can apply for Portuguese citizenship?

Since 19 May 2026, most nationalities need 10 years of legal residence, and nationals of EU and Portuguese-speaking countries need 7. Permanent residence is available after 5 years.

Portugal or Spain: which is easier to move to?
