Common questions

Can Americans retire in Spain?

Yes. US citizens can apply for the Non-Lucrative Visa with passive income of €2,400 a month for one person, or €3,000 for a couple, at 2026 rates. Pensions, Social Security, dividends and rental income all count. Spain issued 15,638 first residence permits to Americans in 2024, more than any other EU country.

Can I work on the Non-Lucrative Visa?

No. It does not allow any work, including remote work for an employer abroad. If you plan to keep working remotely, the Digital Nomad Visa is the route to look at.

Do I need to buy property to get Spanish residency?

No. Spain's golden visa for property buyers closed to new applications on 3 April 2025. None of the routes on this page require buying a home.

Is there a job-seeker visa for Spain?

Only for limited groups. It gives up to 12 months to look for work, and is open to children and grandchildren of Spaniards by origin and to people covered by specific government programmes. Most other applicants need a job offer first, or use the Digital Nomad or Non-Lucrative route.

How much do I need to earn for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa?

About €2,849 a month before tax for one person in 2026, which is twice Spain's minimum wage. A partner adds about €1,068 a month and each further family member about €356. You also need three months of history with your employer or clients, and a degree or three years of experience.

What if my income is below Spain's minimum?

Portugal is worth a look. Its D7 visa starts at €920 a month for one person and €1,380 for a couple in 2026. Iberia Bridge handles moves to both countries.

How long until I can apply for Spanish citizenship?

Usually after ten years of legal residence. Nationals of most Latin American countries can apply after two.
